Working Titles of Famous Novels

Have you ever heard of Jane Austen’s acclaimed novel ‘First Impressions’? How about F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 20th Century masterpiece ‘Trimalchio in West Egg’? Well it wouldn’t be a surprise if you hadn’t as the author’s changed their minds about those titles settling on ones you’ll be much more familiar with: ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and ‘The Great Gatsby’.

Our latest infographic uncovers the working titles of some of the most well-known novels and the reasons behind the author’s change of heart. For example, William Golding’s initial title for ‘Lord of the Flies’ was vetoed by one of his publishers who deemed ‘Strangers from Within’ too absurd. In fact, there are a whole host of novels you might be familiar with that were once known by another name, you can find out which below.
