Charles Whibley A Memoir

Charles Whibley was a prominent literary critic, it was his recommendation that led to Eliot being appointed as editor at Faber.
Bonamy Dobreé (1891-1974) was the only son of a family of wealthy Guernsey bankers. Having distinguished himself at Cambridge after the war, he published a pioneering study of Restoration Comedy in 1924 and immersed himself in the English literary scene, forming acquaintanceships with Pound, Lawrence, and the Bloomsbury Group. It was at one of the Woolfs' parties at Richmond House that he first met Eliot and almost immediately formed a lively friendship. Dobreé became a regular contributor to, and one of Eliot's closest associates at, Criterion. In 1936 Dobreé moved to Leeds where he became Professor of English Literature, a post he maintained until 1955. Dobrée's papers, now at Leeds, show a regular correspondence with Eliot until the latter's death in 1974.
