IN ORIGINAL DUSTWRAPPER
Stalky & Co.
Macmillan, 1899.
First edition. Original red cloth with gilt lettering on the spine and circular vignette of an elephant's head on the upper cover in rare printed dustwrapper. Top edge gilt. A fine copy, with a little foxing to the endpapers and a small rust mark at the top of the title page. In a very good dustwrapper, which is bright and generally crisp with a little wear to the spine ends and shallow chipping to the head of the front panel, plus a closed split to the front fold. Overall an extremely well preserved example of rare and fragile nineteenth century dustwrapper.
Part school story, part adventure novel, Kipling's tales of the charismatic Stalky and his chums divided opinion on publication and for a long time after. "An unpleasant book about unpleasant boys at an unpleasant school", wrote George Sampson in the Cambridge History of English Literature in 1942. Yet on publication it sold well and continues to be one of Kipling's most popular books, regarded as one of the best written school stories of the period.
Major nineteenth century works are very rarely encountered in commerce with their original dustwrapper, particularly in such a well preserved state as this.
