First edition, first issue with a flat spine. Original black cloth with gilt titles to the spine in grey printed dustwrapper. Author's contemporary presentation copy, inscribed on the front end paper: "To D. J. Davies / from / Dylan Thomas / January 1935" A fine copy in a very good dustwrapper, which has small chips to the spine ends and small split in the centre.
The author's first book, published in an edition of only 250 copies, a month after his twentieth birthday in December 1934. In April 1934 Thomas had won the Sunday Referee's Poet's Corner Prize, which included their sponsorship of his first book. He oversaw the publication of the book, staying in London to ensure that the printing went smoothly and to correct any typographical errors.
Thomas's first poems were published in the Swansea Grammar School magazine in 1926. He attended Swansea from 1925-31 and had some success in athletics and acting in school plays, but passed only one exam (English).
D.J. Davies was a history master at Swansea Grammar School, and in charge of the school drama department, with which Thomas was involved.
