Ten volumes. Limited edition, this being number 456 of 780 sets (30 of which were for presentation and not for sale) with volume one numbered and signed by Beerbohm. Original harlequin buckram cloth with paper labels on the spine. Eight of the ten volumes have duplicate title labels loosely laid in at the rear. A bright set with some fading to the spines, particularly the purple volume (as usual), otherwise a near fine, crisp set.
When Heinemann suggested to Beerhohm that they publish a set of his works in a uniform edition, Beerbohm's only stipulations were that they should be in "proportion to the spirit and ambition of the writer... their aspect must be of a simple-gay kind, as opposed to the ornate-dismal... [and].. be all of different colours, so that... every one of them should seem not to have lost utterly its own little soul" [Author's preface]
Volume I. The Works of Max Beerbohm,1922. Includes 'Dandies and Dandies',and 'The Pervasion of Rouge', two of the essays which established his reputation. "These papers are really very brilliant, and almost every page would yield a quotation worth giving" (York Herald, 17th June 1896).
