A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty
Barnaby Rudge A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty
Chapman & Hall, 1841.
First separate edition. Original red-brown fine diaper cloth with blind stamped arabesque and flourishes to covers and gilt titles to spine. Hair-veined endpapers and edges. Illustrated thoughout with engravings after George Cattermole and Halbot Browne. A very good copy indeed with a little uneven fading to the upper cover and a trace of wear to the corners. Internally, notably fresh with tight hinges. An excellent copy.
Originally published as part of the Dickens' weekly serial Master Humphrey's Clock from February - November 1841 and issued separately later that year. The individual issue is significantly the scarcer.
Barnaby Rudge was the first of only two historical novels written by Dickens - the Riots of 'Eighty in the title refers to the Gordon Riots of 1780.
