Sampson Low, 1861.
Victorian children's book. 8vo. Red cloth, decoratively stamped in blind on the front and back, with gilt floral design on the front. All edges gilt. Ten chromolithographs in the style of illuminated manuscripts. A very good copy indeed, the boards a little rubbed, and with new endpapers. Internally clean and bright - a lovely copy, in verse, of this traditional children's tale.
The story is an old morality tale, which tells the tale of two small children who are abandoned to die in the woods, and of the subsequent punishment of their wicked uncle for their deaths. It was not until the twentieth century that Disney gave the story a happy ending.
