SIGNED BY FOUR OF THE EXPEDITION PARTY
The Ascent of Everest
Hodder and Stoughton, 1953.
First edition. Blue cloth in pictorial dustwrapper, designed by William Heaton Cooper. Signed by four members of the expedition party on the dedication page - Edmund Hillary, Charles Wylie, Alfred Gregory and George Lowe (who signed in 1989) and signed again by Hillary on the title page. Illustrated with eight colour and 48 black and white photographic plates as well as diagrammatic drawings in the text. A very good copy with some sunning to the spine and neatly inked date on the front pastedown, in a near fine (supplied) dustwrapper, which is clean and bright.
The chapter on attaining the summit is written by Sir Edmund Hillary and the appendices by other members of the expedition party.
Wylie was the expedition's organising secretary, Gregory in charge of stills photography and Lowe provided support for Hillary and Tenzing, going with them to the South Col with all the necessary kit. Hunt describes Lowe as putting in "a performance which will go down in the annals of mountaineering as an epic achievement of tenacity and skill".
