First edition. 8vo. Bound in recent half calf over marbled boards, raised bands to spine with gilt ruling and titles. All edges red. Includes a loose review of the book to the rear by Col. Holdich. Black and white frontispiece under tissue guard, further black and white illustrations throughout. Folding map at rear. A very good copy, with light foxing, library stamps to front blank, title page and chapter 1 heading. Small tear to the rear map.
Lieutenant Colonel Laurence Austine Waddell was a British explorer. Waddell learnt the Tibetan language, often visiting Tibet in disguise. He studied Buddhism, and used his knowledge of Tibet when he was appointed cultural consultant during the British invasion of Tibet during the early 20th century.
