Shipton is generally considered to be one of the greatest mountaineers of all time, and this account of the attempt on Nanda Devi is described by Hugh Ruttledge as "an epic of mountaineering exploration". The book details the 1934 expedition consisting of only 5 men - Eric Shipton, Bill Tilman, and Ang Tharkay, Kusang and Pasang, from the Sherpa community. Although they did not reach the summit they did manage to breach the gorges of the Rishi Ganga river, showing the path for future expeditions.
Nanda Devi - meaning Bliss Giving Goddess or Blessed Goddess - is revered as a powerful goddess in the Hindu pantheon, meaning the mountain is of significant religious importance.
