Kew Gardens
Hogarth Press, 1927.
Third edition, the first edition illustrated throughout by Vanessa Bell, one of 500 copies, this copy unnumbered. Original paper covered boards, decorated by Bell in blue, green and brown, with a contemporary brown paper dustwrapper. A fine copy, exceptionally well preserved with the boards uncommonly bright and clean with just a little pushing to the head of the spine, and a short closed tear to one of the leaves.
First published in 1919, Kew Gardens was Woolf's third published book and the first book to contain illustrations by her sister Vanessa (frontispiece and tailpiece). Its unexpected success was "the most dramatic factor in the Woolfs' becoming significant commercial publisher" (Woolmer p. xxiii). The flood of orders meant that a second edition had to be produced quickly with the help of professional printer Richard Madley.
This third edition, published some eight years later, is in terms of production, an entirely new work, being in a larger format with cover illustrations in colour and new illustrations throughout by Vanessa Bell. Due to the fragility of the paper covered boards, it is exceptionally rare in a fine state.
