Duncan Grant was a prominent member of the Bloomsbury set, and a life long friend to Virginia Woolf. This was the only one of Woolf's books to be illustrated by Grant's post-impressionist, expressive sketches that suits Woolf's creative and abstract writing style. The story was first published in The Times Literary Supplement, after the piece was found tucked within the manuscript notebooks for Mrs Dalloway, after it had been acquired by the British Museum. It then appeared in book form for the first time in 1966.
