Introduction by Thomas Bodkin.
The Fairy Tales of Perrault Introduction by Thomas Bodkin.
Harrap, 1922.
First edition. 4to. In publisher's deluxe binding of pale blue moiré silk with gilt titles. Top edge gilt. Twelve full page colour plates and twelve stunning black and white plates. A very near fine, bright copy, one plate mount with a tiny crease to the lower edge.
This is one of the most sought after of Clarke's works. Containing such popular fairy tales as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, its illustrations have a magical quality. Clarke's style, very reminiscent of Nielsen, is seen at its best, with the combination of colour and black and white illustrations. There are no UK reprints of this title nor was a limited edition printed. Contemporary reviews of the book were not entire positive. "The Perrault drawings abound in idiosyncratic and fantastic detail and were perhaps too weird for a generation more attuned to... Rackham, Dulac and the Robinsons." (Nicola Gordon Bowe).
