A Gallery of Children
Stanley Paul & Co. 1925.
First edition. Large 4to. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering and pictorial onlay to the upper cover. This copy in the original pictorial dustwrapper. Pictorial title page and twelve colour illustrations by Saida (Henriette Willebeek Le Mair). A fine copy in near fine dustwrapper, which has a small tear to the rear panel, but is bright, clean and crisp.
This is Milne's first book of prose for children. The half title mentions that A.A. Milne is the author of "When We Were Very Young", which had been published to great acclaim the previous year. This book predates Winnie the Pooh by one year.
The stories were written to accompany the illustrations which had originally appeared in 1923 as advertisements for Colgate. They are signed "Saida", a pseudonym for Dutch artist Henritette Willbeek Le Mair. So popular were the drawings that Milne was asked to write children's stories to accompany them in this rather large, and beautiful book.
