IN THE ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET
The Tale of Mr Tod
F. Warne & Co., 1912.
First edition. 12mo. Grey paper covered boards, lettered in green and with pictorial onlay on the upper cover. In the original printed glassine dustwrapper. Pictorial endpapers, fourteen colour illustrations and many small line drawings. A fine copy in its printed glassine dustwrapper. The wrapper is in very good condition with a couple of minor chips to edges.
On sending the manuscript for Tod to her publisher's Potter wrote of it "I think this story is amusing". It differs from her other stories in that the principal characters are villains. The opening section of the original manuscript read "I am quite tired of making goody goody books" whilst the book on publication read, "I have made many books about well behaved people."
It differs also in that it has fewer colour illustrations, introduces the use of line drawings and moves away from the style of short paragraphs used in the early tales.
