Comprising, When We Were Very Young; Winnie the Pooh and Now We Are Six
We'll be Friends Forever, won't we, Pooh?' asked Piglet. Even longer,' Pooh answered.
The First Three 'Pooh' Books Comprising, When We Were Very Young; Winnie the Pooh and Now We Are Six
Methuen, 1928.
Monogram edition. Three volumes, being the 1927 edition of When We Were Very Young and the 1928 editions of Winnie the Pooh and Now We Are Six. Uniformly bound in publisher's tan roan, with gilt titles and and vignettes of the characters to the spine. Gilt and brown blocked border to the upper cover with a brown blocked hexagonal device with AAM blocked in gilt. All edges gilt with silk marker sash to the second and third volumes. Each volume with a tissue dustwrapper. All housed in the original brown card box. Pictorial endpapers. Illustrated throughout in line by E.H. Shepard. A fine set, crisp and clean, with near fine tissue dustwrappers, all housed in a very good original card box, sound but with tape reinforcement. The outer layers have successfully protected the books themselves which are impressively free from any of the wear usually associated with these delicate leather bindings.
These three volumes appear to be the first appearance of the poplar monogram edition, issued in a set of three, apparently before the publication of the final Pooh Book, The House at Pooh Corner, later that year. This is the first set we have encountered with its original box.
The deluxe format uses leather bindings and extra gilt, rather like the deluxe issues of the separate trade editions, but in this case all in a uniform binding. The format proved popular and all the titles were reprinted in this binding through out the late 1920s.
