A fine association. Thomas Hardy had been a significant influence on Sassoon as a young poet and pair became close friends upon Sassoon's return from the war in 1918 until Hardy's death in 1928. Subsequently, Sassoon continued his association with the Max Gate in his friendship with Hardy's widow, Florence, describing her as one who "impresses me as being one the good and brave inhabitants of this unsatisfactory earth" (Diaries 1920-22)
