INSCRIBED FOR LAURIE LEE
The Sea Change
Jonathan Cape, 1959.
First edition. Publisher's marbled cloth in the original acetate dustwrapper, lettered in gilt and blue. Inscribed by Howard for Laurie Lee on the front endpaper, "Laurie, the only copy of this book in Bedford Square. from Jane. 9th November 1959." A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper, with a shallow chip to the base of the spine and a closed tear to the upper cover.
An exceptional presentation copy, inscribed by Howard for her old flame Laurie Lee.
They were introduced by Cecil Day-Lewis in 1955, and that September holidayed together in Spain. By this time she had published one novel, The Beautiful Visit, and a collection of short stories. One day during this trip, whilst sat on a rock, Lee remarked "Someone who looks like you can't be any good at writing", so Howard pushed him into the sea.
The affair did not last long, but was never going to, recalled Howard, "Yes, we were lovers, but it wasn't meant to have a future. We have always been loving friends. Always."
The Sea Change was published in the same year as Cider With Rosie, and having finished the manuscript for her novel, Howard sent it to Lee for his thoughts. He responded with admiration, "Dear Artist Isabel, To read these pages after my own is like watching a dolphin swim".
