JOYCE TO DESMOND HARMSWORTH
Pomes Penyeach
Shakespeare and Company, Paris, 1927.
First edition. Original sage paper covered boards lettered in green, in original glassine dustwrapper with author and title in manuscript. Price sticker of two shillings to the rear cover covering the printed price of one shilling. Author's presentation copy inscribed on the title page, "To D.H. / J.J. / Paris 7.iv.1931" A very good copy indeed, with a little wear to the spine ends.
Inscribed by Joyce for Desmond Harmsworth, Second Baron Rothermere, son of politician Cecil Harmsworth and nephew of Viscounts Northcliffe and Rothermere. Educated at Eton and Oxford, Harmsworth chose to go to art school in Paris rather than join the family newspaper firm, becoming a poet and artist. Whilst in Paris, Harmsworth became a confidante of writers such as James Joyce and Wyndham Lewis and began publishing literary works. He published Wyndham Lewis, Norman Douglas and others, however his most celebrated book is the 1932 edition of Joyce's Pomes Penyeach illustrated by Lucia Joyce which he co-published with the Obelisk Press of Paris.
