From the German of Carobe, by Sarah Austin
The Story Without End From the German of Carobe, by Sarah Austin
Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1868.
First edition. 4to. Green cloth over bevelled boards with elaborate gilt embossed decoration to the upper cover. All edges gilt. Sepia engraved frontis and fifteen colour chromolithographic plates, each protected by a tissue guard. A very good copy indeed.
This story is based on a classic German fairy tale, translated by Sarah Austin, as it had been her daughter's favourite childhood tale. It tells of a child taking an idyllic journey of discovery through the natural world. Awakened by birdsong and the rays of the sun, the child listens to stories of the butterfly and the ocean's waves, dines on berries, gossips with fireflies, and sleeps on a couch of moss.
E.V.B.'s beautiful illustrations transport you to the natural world, making mouths water for the plump, juicy blackberries and noses tingle with the perfume of spring flowers. Simply delightful.
