INSCRIBED BY DU MAURIER TO SIR ARTHUR QUILLER-COUCH
Frenchman's Creek
Victor Gollancz Ltd., 1941.
First edition. Blue cloth, lettered in gilt, in original printed yellow dustwrapper. Inscribed by du Maurier on the front free endpaper "To Sir Arthur and the Haven, / with love from / Daphne / Sept. 1941" A very good copy in a worn dustwrapper.
An important association, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch being du Maurier's mentor and friend.
Frenchman's Creek was the title of one of Sir Arthur's own short stories, which he gave permission for du Maurier to use, saying modestly that "his own tale had been long forgotten". Daphne was a frequent visitor to The Haven, Quiller-Couch's family home. She was a great admirer of Q's writing and he became very supportive of her literary career.
"I was nineteen when we first came to live in Fowey and the great man of the district, indeed the whole of Cornwall, was Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch ("Q")... It was a great day for me when, after some preliminary gestures of friendship on the part of his daughter, Foy, I was invited to Sunday supper." wrote Du Maurier.
PROVENANCE: Originally from the estate of Sir Arthur Quiller Couch and latterly from the library of Foy Quiller-Couch, daughter of Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch and close friend of Du Maurier.
Margaret Foster, Daphne Du Maurier.
