Sylvia Plath's copy of The Oxford Book Of Wild Flowers. Original pictorial boards in the green pictorial dustwrapper. Inscribed by Ted Hughes on the front free endpaper "To darling Sylvia from Ted, March 25th 1961". A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper.
In the winter of 1961 Plath had suffered a miscarriage and underwent an appendectomy shortly afterwards, spending much time in hospital. Though a difficult time, Plath found nature a source of solace and contemplation. It also sparked an incredibly creative period, including her composition of 'Tulips' and the beginnings of what would become 'The Bell Jar', spurred by the news at the end of February that the New Yorker wanted offer of first refusal on any new poems.
In a letter home to her mother dated March 27th 1961, Sylvia wrote "Ted brought me a little bouqet of yellow primroses yesterday with a handsome edition of the Oxford Book Of Wild Flowers - the remains of that kind $10 you sent. He is the sweetest, most thoughtful person in the world. I have had a rather glum winter, and he has tirelessly stood by and cheered me up in every conceivable way" (Letters Home, Faber, 2010).
