Henriette Campan was the Première Femme de Chambre (First Maid of the Chamber) to Marie Antoinette, with daily intimate contact with the queen. Her memoirs detail life at the French court, its rituals, etiquette, personages and politics, the French Revolution, the fall of the House of Bourbon, and the deaths of the king and queen. Originally published in English in 1823, this edition adds notes from works published subsequent to the first edition which "throw a new light on many of the circumstances narrated by Madame Campan". "Portraits of some of the personages referred to in the work have been added to the present edition." [Publisher's note]
