The Wombles books are based on a series of environmentally friendly furry creatures who live in burrows bellow Wimbledon Common. Their purpose is to keep the common tidy, gathering rubbish and "making good use of the things that they find". The books inspired a television series, narrated by Bernard Cribbens, for which the theme tune was written by Mike Batt, who subsequently formed a band with the same name and had a couple of hit singles. The band dressed in Womble outfits.
