Two volumes, each in the special publisher's deluxe bindings of brown/ black morocco. Siegfried being a first edition and Rhinegold a new impression. 4to. Handsomely embossed with gilt lettering and vignettes and with top edge gilt. A total of 64 colour plates. The first volume with 34 mounted colour plates under captioned tissue guards (plate at p.118 with a small abrasion), and a few small line drawings in the text. The second with 30 mounted colour plates, under captioned tissue guards, and numerous small line drawings in the text. A beautiful set, most uncommon in this special binding. Each volume in near fine condition.
A gorgeous pictorial representation of Wagner's epic tale of dwarves, Gods and heroes allowing Rackham the opportunity to draw on the German art which inspired him so greatly. His paintings for these volumes are often considered amongst his best work.
