The first book in the immensely popular Thomas the Tank Engine series, with stories featuring Edward, Gordon and Henry. "'It all began,' says Wilbert [Awdry], 'when Christopher caught measles...'. Like so many of the best books written for children the first book in the Railway Series, The Three Railway Engines, began as a story to please one particular child." (Brian Sibley - The Thomas the Tank Engine Man).
The story was well received and Awdry looked for a publisher. It was a few years and a good few rejections later that they came to the notice of Edmund Ward, a small printer from Leicester who agreed to publish the book 'in good class style at a later date'.
