First edition. 4to. Large paper issue, 17 of 50 special copies, from an overall print run of 500 deluxe copies. Signed by Mortimer Menpes on the limitation page. White buckram with bevelled edges, gilt lettering and decoration in green and purple. Red silk page marker present. Top edge gilt and other edges untrimmed. This copy with an original signed watercolour painting of a little Dutch girl. One hundred colour illustrations, under captioned tissue guards, by Mortimer Menpes. In near fine condition.
This copy one of the first 50 copies, each of which contain an original watercolour painting. The original sale price of these deluxe copies was £5-5s compared to the 2 guineas charged for the other 450 copies.
This book recounts the impressions Dorothy and Mortimer Menpes formed of children from different cultures as they travelled around the world, ranging from the "sweet innocence" of the English child, to the obedience of the French child and the "queer, half-sad, half-happy life" of the Chinese child. The book discusses the attitudes towards children and their role in society in each of the countries they visit, which includs Italy, Spain, Rumania, Holland, North America, Mexico, India, China, Japan, Russia, Egypt and Burma.
