A story for the young in heart
SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY WITH ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR & AUTOGRAPH LETTERS
Little Grey Men A story for the young in heart
Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1942.
First edition. 8vo. Grey cloth with red lettering in (supplied) pictorial dustwrapper with colour illustration by BB on the upper cover. Signed on the title page by the author. Inserted onto the front pastedown is a charming original watercolour illustration signed "D. Watkins-Pitchford, 1978", depicting a gnome dozing on the river bank. Accompanying the book is a postcard from Watkins-Pitchford which says, "herewith "Sleeping Baldmoney" one of my gnomes (no charge product of a wet afternoon) yrs BB". Also present are two further autograph letters in their original envelopes and an autograph note card from BB to the recipient of the book and watercolour, Mr Steele. The common theme in the others is the discussion about an "Iris", a Purple Emperor butterfly of which BB hatched the eggs in a pill box. The last letter mentions that BB has just finished working on the illustrations for the Naturalist's Bedside Book. The book itself is illustrated with 21 full page black and white drawings by the author, plus many head and tail pieces. A very good copy (closed tear to the lower margin of the frontis page) in very good dustwrapper.
A fabulous association copy of this popular book, with an original watercolour of one of the story's key characters. The book is one of BB's most popular, an enchanting children's story and winner of the Carnegie medal.
