First edition. Two volumes. Handsome contemporary binding of half green crushed morocco over marbled boards, raised bands to the spines, lettered in gilt. Fifty-two sepia aquatint plates, each protected by the original tissue guard, two engraved aquatint title pages and two engraved maps. A handsome set, some light wear to the bindings. Internally, occasional marginal browning to the plates, but generally a clean and tall.

A fine set of Thames views and aquatints. Volume One features views and description of the upper part of the Thames, from Gloucestershire to Henley. Volume Two covering the lower part of the river through London. Views include Magdalen Bridge, Oxford, Henley Bridge, Goring, Abingdon and Richmond.
Samuel Ireland,1744-1800, was a n author, collector and etcher whose series of volumes of picturesque views have always been highly regarded. Ireland began life as a weaver in Spitalfields, then turned engraver and print dealer, and became fanatical collector. His collection was sold at Christie's anonymously on 6 May 1797. His son William Henry Ireland perpetrated the famous Shakespeare forgery.
