First [sole] edition. 12mo. Original maroon cloth sometime rebacked and with remnants of Plowman's Circulating Library label pasted onto the upper cover. Inscribed by the author on the half title "Mr Plowman with the Author's Compliments". A good copy of a scarce item, Plowman's library stamp on the front pastedown.
Joseph Plowman, originally an Oxfordshire auctioneer, founded the City Reading Room, generally considered to be the forerunner to the public library, in Oxford in 1831. This rare publication was presented by the author to Joseph Plowman and retains the original Plowman's Circulating Library label on the upper cover.
