The Four Quartets
Harcourt, Brace & Company, 1943.
First collected edition, first printing, with "first American edition" on the copyright page. Original black cloth, gilt titles to spine, in first issue dustwrapper printed in black and grey. A near fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper which is slightly tanned to the lettering on the spine and just a trace of wear to one corner, but an uncommonly well preserved example.
This printing, which precedes the British edition by over a year, was recalled by the publishers after only 788 copies had been distributed on the grounds that the printing was below acceptable standards due to unskilled war-time labour.
"The entire impression would have been destroyed except that it was necessary to meet the announced publication date and consequently 788 copies for review and other purposes were distributed before the corrected impression was ready." (Gallup)
