Letters Between the Rev. James Granger, M.a. Rector of Shiplake, and Many of the Most Eminent Literary Men of His Time Composing a Copious History and Illustration of his Biographical History of England, with Miscellanies, and Notes of tours in France, Holland and Spain by the Same Gentleman
Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1805.
First edition. Half polished calf over marbled boards, gilt lettering and decoration between raised bands on the spine. Marbled endpapers. Engraved frontis plus three other engraved plates and two pages of facsimile signatures. A very good copy, calf a little rubbed and with some edge wear.
Granger was a biographer and collector of engraved portraits. His monumental work "Biographical History of England from Egbert the Great to the Revolution: Consisting of Characters Disposed in Different Classes and Adapted to a Methodical Catalogue of Engraved British Heads" led to the term "Grangerizing" meaning the collection of additional illustrations to be interleaved with a text. He corresponded with anyone who possessed a library containing illustrated books and those sources of information were published here posthumously.
