Undine by De La Motte Fouqué
William Heinemann, 1909.
First edition illustrated by Rackham. 4to. Original blue pictorial cloth with elaborate gilt decoration to spine and gilt titles and vignette to upper cover. Pictorial endpapers and numerous chapter headings and black and white vignette decorations. Fifteen enchanting colour plates mounted under captioned tissue guards. A very good copy, a little rubbed to the edges, occasional foxing and some browning to the endpapers and plate mounts.
Rackham's fifteen pictures for Undine perfectly capture the mystery of this beautiful German fairy story in which Fouque explores the dilemmas faced by a medieval knight in his love for a water-sprite. The images range from the extreme delicacy and sensitive colour of 'He could see Undine beneath the crystal vault' to the sombre terror of 'Bertalda in the Black Valley'.
