First edition thus. 4to. Green cloth with gilt lettering and vignettes to upper cover and spine. Top edge green. Charming sketch on the half titles of a little man and woman, and the inscription "To Robert + Awdry / with best wishes / from Edyth + Arthur Rackham / Christmas 1917". Endpapers have a purple line drawing of a fairy queen and her elfin helpers. Twelve colour plates, mounted onto brown art paper, each with a printed caption below. There are also many black and white drawings, some full page. A very good copy, spotting to the page edges and rear endpapers, corners lightly bumped.
A charming version of Grimm's fairy tales accompanied by Rackham's illustrations. Fairy tales include: Snow-white and Rose Red; Thumbling's Travels etc.
PROVENANCE: Christmas gift to Robert and Awdry Starkie from Arthur and Edyth Rackham. Arthur Rackham married Edyth Starkie in 1903 and each Christmas Arthur sent his latest book to her family.
