J Robson, 1766.
First edition thus. Two volumes. Contemporary polished calf, with gilt lettering and decoration to the spine and gilt decorative border to the boards. Blue silk marker sash in both volumes. Marbled endpapers A good set. Some scuffing to the spine and a little wear to the joint, with the top joint of volume II somewhat tender.
Originally published as Statesmen and Favourites of England since the Reformation in 1665 and 1670, this edition was edited by Charles Whitworth a hundred years later in order to counteract the effect of Lloyd's extravagant eulogies of the royalists, particularly those under Charles I and II. The "Worthies" include Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cranmer, William Cecil [Lord Burleigh], Oliver Cromwell amongst many others. A contemporary review wrote "we think the public is greatly obliged to Mr Whitworth for reprinting this work... we heartily thank him for the entertainment it has given ourselves in the perusal."
From the library of Dorothy L Sayers, with provenance bookplate on front pastedown.
