From the 10th May Until the Fall of Delhi
The Crisis in the Punjab, From the 10th May Until the Fall of Delhi
Smith, Elder and Co., 1858.
First London edition. 8vo. Publisher's brown pebble grained decorative cloth, spine gilt. 16pp of publisher's advertisements to rear. Folding map, woodcut plan of execution of prisoners. A near fine copy, the cloth very bright, corners lightly bumped, hinges cracking but holding, light worming to blank gutter towards front, map with tiny tear.
Scarce first London edition, published the same year as the extremely rare Lahore-printed edition, of this account of the 1857 Indian Mutiny in the Punjab region by Frederic Henry Cooper, the deputy commissioner for Amritsar. It contains Cooper's enthusiastic descriptions of his violent persecution of the rebellious sepoy troops, including their execution by cannon, acts of cruelty for which Cooper would be censured by his contemporaries. Cooper was especially vilified for the massacre of over two hundred and eighty sepoys, whose bodies were dumped in a well at Anjala near Amritsar, known today as Shaheedan Wala Khu or 'Martyrs' Well'.
