The Personal History of David Copperfield
The Westminster Press, 1911.
A sumptuous Christmas Gift book. Large quarto. Red cloth, lettered in gilt and black, with gilt and black vignette. Pictorial endpapers. Tipped-in colour frontispiece with nineteen further tipped-in colour plates, under captioned tissue guards, plus a coloured illustration on title page, by Reynolds. A very good copy indeed with slight dustiness on the spine and page edges.
David Copperfield, described by Dickens as "my favourite child", marks a step change in the author's career, a transition from composer of popular, picaresque, comedies to great novelist. It now ranks as one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. This bright copy beautifully illustrates the tale.
