Finely bound in a Cosway style binding by Bayntun Riviere of full crimson crushed morocco, boards and dentelles with gilt borders and floral cornerpieces, oval hand-painted miniature portrait of Shakespeare inlaid on upper cover behind clear window, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, silk tie. Title-page in teal and black, each poem with teal initial. A near fine copy, sympathetically rebacked.
An elegant edition of Shakespeare's Sonnets, printed by the Chiswick Press for the Bath bookseller Robert Riviere, and bound by Bayntun Riviere. Cosway-style bindings are named for the eighteenth century miniaturist Richard Cosway (d. 1821), and feature miniature portraits in his style, but were only introduced around 1901.
