The Hobbit
Allen & Unwin, 1942.
Third impression. Original green cloth decorated and lettered in dark blue. Top edge green. Map endpapers in black and red, colour frontispiece and eight full page black and white illustrations, all by the author. A very good copy indeed with some faint marks to the front board and a slightly cocked spine.
One of only 1500 copies of the third impression, which was printed in 1942 but not issued until early 1943. In complying with war-time economy restrictions it retains only the frontispiece of the colour plates introduced in the second impression, replacing the remainder with Tolkien's line drawings used in the first edition. It also corrects some of the many minor printing errors from the first two printings.
