Bloomsbury conceived of the idea of issuing the increasingly popular Harry Potter books in a deluxe format in the run up to the publication of The Prisoner Of Azkaban. Publisher Nigel Newton recalled, "if you think of any of the great children's classics, there would tend to be a really nice edition. Harry Potter deserves it more than anything we've ever published."
The first three books were issued in a deluxe edition around the time of the publication of Azkaban. Thereafter, there were issued simultaneously with the releases of each new book.
