SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND WITH AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER
The Rainbow
Methuen, 1915.
First edition. Original teal cloth, lettered in blind on the upper cover, gilt-decoration and lettering on the spine. Signed in black ink by the author to the title-page. Accompanied by a hand-written, signed two sided letter, from Lawrence to his literary agent J. B. Pinker dated 14th December 1915, discussing the title of Twilight in Italy and the publication of The Rainbow. A fine and bright copy, with the lower fore corners slightly bumped. Circular stamp neatly washed from the base of the title page.
Lawrence's great early novel of which only 1250 copies of the first edition were printed, and about a third of which were destroyed following the book's prosecution for obscenity. Signed copies are rare.
J.B. Pinker was D.H. Lawrence's literary agent during the First World War, and oversaw publications including The Rainbow, while Lawrence battled his work facing censorship and personal financially instability.
