First edition. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering on cover, and titles and illustration in brown, in green-blue dustwrapper with pictorial onlay. Six illustrations in colour and numerous line drawings by the author. A near fine copy with a little fading to the upper part of the boards, in a very good dustwrapper, with a small chip to the base of the spine and a small puncture to the rear cover.
Beatrix Potter took inspiration from a coastal trip to Falmouth and Hastings, as well as Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe story. It is one of her more lengthy tales, being divided into eight chapters.
