Scottish author, Alistair MacLean won a short story competition in 1954, after which his publisher convinced him to expand and write a book. H.M.S. Ulysses was his debut novel, recounting his time in the Royal Navy during World War II. It sold rapidly, over 250,000 hardback copies within six months of being published, beginning MacLean's career as a fully fledged writer.
