For Little Children
Just So Stories For Little Children
Macmillan, 1913.
First edition with colour illustrations. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering and vignette, top edge gilt. Line drawings throughout by the author and 12 colour plates by Joseph Gleeson. A very good copy, some discolouration to the fore edge of the upper board, neat contemporary inscription.
Kipling's well loved stories include: "How the Camel Got His Hump" and "How the Leopard Got His Spots".Illustrated in colour by Joseph Gleeson, an American illustrator who specialised in painting animals, being responsible for the only painting of the life of a thylacine and her cubs, from the National Zoo's specimens in 1902.
"Mr. Kipling's Just So Stories is the only recent original book for children whose standing in this connection appears to be fairly sure. It does for very little children much what the Jungle Books did for older ones." H.W. Boynton (The Atlantic Review, 1903)
