The Second World War Comprising: The Gathering Storm; Their Finest Hour; The Grand Alliance; The Hinge of Fate; Closing the Ring; Triumph and Tragedy.
Cassell, 1948.
Six volumes, all first editions. 8vo. Black cloth with gilt lettering in original printed dustwrappers. Inscribed by the author for H.A. Pelly in volume one. Illustrated in black and white with maps and diagrams. A near fine set with a little foxing to the page edges in very good dustwrappers, with faded spines and minor wear to the extremities.
Included is a covering letter from Churchill's private secretary returning the book "which Mr. Churchill has now inscribed for you with great pleasure". Also included is a draft of the covering letter sent by Pelly to Churchill, explaining that he has inherited a collection of books inscribed to his cousin (F.R. Pelly) and asking if Churchill might inscribe the book he encloses to match. Finally there is a letter from Viscount Alanbrooke, who was Churchill's Chief of the Imperial General Staff during WWII (and Pelly's brother in law) giving him Churchill's address.
