First edition. 8vo. Contemporary half green calf over marbled paper boards lettered in gilt to a black title label on the spine. All edges marbled. Green silk page marker present. Marbled endpapers. Hand-coloured frontis and title page, plus sixteen further hand-coloured plates and numerous line drawings throughout. A very good copy with a touch of toning to the spine and a little wear to the spine ends. Internally fresh.
Written while McIntosh was the head gardener to the Duke of Buccleuch, overseeing the creation of the the gardens at Dalkeith Palace, The Orchard is his guide to the fruitful management of a range of plants. His designs were appreciated greatly by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who asked to meet him on their visit to the estate in 1842.
