Brier-Patch Philosophy by "Peter Rabbit"
Ginn & Co., 1906.
First edition. 8vo. Green cloth with gilt lettering and vignettes. Top edge gilt. Colour frontispiece and line drawings throughout by Copeland. A fine copy.
In early 1905 Long began publishing a series of essays in Harper's Monthly under the pseudonym Peter Rabbit; told from the point of view of the "author", the essays comment upon the human condition, animal intelligence, and the controversy concerning real versus sham natural history. The essays were published a year later in this volume. "Unlike the "Peter Rabbit" beloved of little people, this is not an animal story or a book for children... [it is] an effort to understand the common life of animals and men, and to be reasonably cheerful about both."
