First edition. Square 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt design and lettering to upper cover and spine. All edges gilt. Pictorial endpapers, seventy-two black and white line drawings and plates, some with a touch of colour, and those facing each other with tissue guards. A very good copy, some rubbing to extremities, rear joint split but holding, otherwise very fresh internally. Ownership inscription to verso of front free endpaper.
Ball was involved in the popularisation of science, particularly astronomy, during the second half of the nineteenth century, and this Atlas was intended by him to "facilitate [the] study of the heavens." [Preface]
