Original blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper cover in pictorial dustwrapper illustrated by Bip Pares, complete with rare Evening Standard wraparound band. Four full page woodcut illustrations by Pares. A near fine copy, bright with some light foxing internally, in a near fine dustwrapper, uncommonly clean and fresh with only the slightest rubbing to the edges.
The author's touching novel about the long career of a schoolmaster, based on a composite of several master's of Hilton's acquaintances including his father and W.H. Balgarnie, a master at Hilton's school, The Leys, Cambridge, under whose influence Hilton's first stories and essays were published in the school magazine.
The book was an instant success and was solely responsible for Hilton achieving the status of a best selling author, aided by the very popular film of 1939.
