The author's touching novel about the long career of a schoolmaster, based on a composite of several master's of Hilton's acquaintances including his father and W.H. Balgarnie, a master at Hilton's school, The Leys, Cambridge, under whose influence Hilton's first stories and essays were published in the school magazine.
