Great Britain Illustrated A Series of Original Views from Drawings by William Westall, Engraved by and under the Direction of Edward Finden with Descriptions by Thomas Moule
Charles Tilt, 1830.
First edition. 4to (268 x 210mm, or c. 10.5" x 8"). Full green embossed morocco by Remnant & Edmonds, their name stamped on the front and rear covers and the design signed "DN". Three decorative borders to each cover, encasing a central Grecian scene depicting the Arts. Decorations and gilt titles to rib-grained spine. All edges gilt. Engraved title page, plus 59 plates showing 118 views. An attractive, near fine copy, with light rubbing to joints, spine ends and corners.
An early and uncommon Remnant and Edmonds embossed binding.
Westall's Great Britain Illustrated was a popular book, first issued in parts by subscription, before the publisher Charles Tilt began to offer bound copies in 1830. Copies were available "half bound in green morcco, with gilt tops, price 34s." or "splendidly bound in arabesque morocco, price 48s.".
This copy appears to be one of a small number bound by Remnant and Edmonds in an elaborate embossed design featuring the arts of painting, music and writing.
Due to the book's popularity it is not itself uncommon in commerce. And yet, of the fifty auction records for the book in the last thirty years, only two were bound by Remnant and Edmonds, and both of those featured an alternative design to these covers.
